Sadness out of the dust...

Karen Hesse creates a touching story from the point of view of Billie Jo; a young girl growing up in an area called the Dust Bowl and living in the setting of the Great Depression.

  1. Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse is considered historical fiction. It is a story about a specific period in time.
The structure of Out of the Dust reads like a novel but it is in poem format.

  2. Imagine what life would be like in the Great Depression? Add to the difficult economic history of our nation, the reality of living in an area like the Dust Bowl. A place where there are massive droughts and land as dry and dusty as this period in the United States. What would it be like to live back then? How would you get by? Billie Jo struggles with the relationship she has with her father. Are difficult relationships worth working at?

  4. I enjoyed your blog. I like to try and find new books that touch on historical fiction in America to use in my classroom. I enjoyed Out of the Dust and I find it would be an easy book to pair with Grapes of Wrath.

  5. The author used the form of poetry to tell a narrative. The language Billy Jo uses is powerful and poetic. Free verse poetry is a kind of poetry that does not have a rhyme scheme. It is free-flowing and easily understood.
